Have you heard about a Fragrance Masterclass? Infact I had no clue what a Fragrance Masterclass was when I got the invitation from Blue Salon for the exclusive launch of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rogue 540. Fragrance Masterclass was all about the introduction of the concept of a Fragrance Wardrobe by Francis Kurdjian.
Mark Chaya, the CEO and Co-founder of Maison Francis Kurkdjian introduced to us Francis Kurkdjian, the perfume brain behind niche perfumes like Yves Saint Laurent Opium, Giorgio Armani Mania, John Paul Gaultier Le Male, Guerlain Rose Barbare, Dior Eau Noire and many other acclaimed fragrances. Francis was the first person to introduce Made-to-Measure fragrances, fragrances that are custom made according to your preferences.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian was launched in 2009 with the practice of having the name of the perfumer on the bottle of the perfume which was a long lost tradition in the olfactory history. In 1900s Fashion houses discovered the money generating power of perfumes and the perfumers started working for the Fashion houses instead.
Our Fragrance Masterckass started with the introduction of the sources of perfume oils. There are more than 800 sources to make fragrances and a lot of work goes into mixing and matching to get the right consistency that do not harm your skin. Most of the raw materials are harsh on the skin and cannot be directly used. There are seven flowers which are used as base in perfumery and they are the Iris, Jasmine, Orange blossom, Ylang Ylang, Narcissus, Rose and Lavender.
Marc Chaya started talking about the most expensive essential oil, Iris. To make a litre of the Iris essential oil, 10000 kilograms of Iris resin is used. The next most precious and expensive oil is the Oud which is favorite in my family. The Oud tree is affected by a fungus which actually forms a layer on the bark of the tree and 5000 kilograms of Oud resin is needed to make a litre of Oud essential oil. We were passed the Pure Oud oil from Laos that was around 50000$ for a litre. The top notes for the oil was a bit harsh. But leave it on and the smell change to the most beautiul aroma ever. As you know people in the Arab world love Oud and I am no different. MFK has a range of five different Oud mood Collections which are the Oud, Satin, Velvet, Cashmere and Silk Ouds. Silk Oud is my new favorite perfume and I just have gone crazy for it.
The concept of a fragrance wardrobe starts with the introduction of each of the perfume of MFK that was classified into different categories. Perfumes are for different moods and occassions. Some might be casual while others might be catchy. MFK designed perfumes to have effect each day with different scents rather than a one perfume for life. MFK has perfumes for each mood be it soft and subtle to exclusively catchy.
March Chaya introduced the essential perfumes which everyone should possess. These were the beautiful Aqua range that was an everyday wear. They consisted of the Aqua Universalis, the perfume that can be worn for any mood of the day or any occasion. The fresh notes of this perfume had me taken away from everything around. It is both designed for men and women. The second one was Aqua Universalis Forte which was subtle again. Aqua Vitae and APOM are the other two scents of the Aqua category. APOM stands for A Part Of Me. This is more of a cocktail scent, something Chaya refered to as a Perfect fit suite.
Other perfumes were the À la rose and Amyris. The floral notes of À la rose evokes the crisp tenderness of rose petals and a radiant aura. Amyris as a scented bond between Amyris femme and Amyris homme, Iris from Florence and amyris tree from Jamaica maintain secret and intense olfactory conversations. This duo has an irresistible aura and conveys effortless elegance. The travel collection of MFK is a super sophisticated bottle design.
Finally the Baccarat Rogue 540 was launched. This was a perfume born from the collaboration between MFK and Maison Baccarat in its 250th anniversary of the Iconic Crystal House. An eau de parfum, is ‘luminous and sophisticated, lays on the skin like an amber floral and woody breeze.’
Maison Farncis Kurkdjian fragrances are bespoke and beautifully selected to match moods and occassions. The Silk Oud is my favorite perfume now followed by the Aqua Universalis. The scents are seductive yet soft that leave you refreshed and happy.
The event was followed by selection of delicious canapes and desserts. Delicious and addictive as well.
